Neodesha, Kansas

On the east bank of the Verdigris River at Neodesha you can see a large Burr Oak tree that is about 300 years old. No doubt before the lumber hunters came here, many huge trees grew along this river bank and in this area. The oak stands on the original J.B.Keys claim bought in 1868.

Further southeast along Dry Creek another Burr Oak was not so fortunate to dodge the axe. Along the bank is the stump of a Burr Oak that was approximately 400 years old when it was cut down by an unthinking firewood cutter in 1987. The stump measures 6 feet in diameter and 20 feet in circumference. The tree stood about 80 feet in height. The stump is located on private property; be respectful please.
